This is a book aimed primarily at beginning and intermediate modelers in the UK and focuses on techniques constructing Airfix kits.
it describes in increasing complexity the construction of Airfix RAF Spitfires and Defiants in 1/72 and 1/48, then the Bf-109 in 1/72 and 1/48 followed by 2 1/72 Bf-110s as Airfix don’t make a 110 in 1/48.
Looking at the contents, the first chapter, “workshop” covers basic modeling tools for the neophyte, then goes into the construction of the subjects broken down by country and role: RAF day fighters for example.
Andy discusses primering and different painting techniques from brush painting to airbrushing, using pin washes to bring out details, and adds historical information about color schemes as well.
He following chapters deal in more detail with techniques of masking and applying decals, and also, interestingly and rarely discussed in aviation modeling circles, building aircraft in flight but also painting figures and basic groundwork for simple dioramas, as well as weathering, which I think are a very nice addition to this book.
Even more advanced modelers could glean something from those chapters.
While it might have been better to use the Eduard 110s in 1/72 and 1/48 as examples for more advanced modelers, do a Hurricane in 1/48 instead of another Apitfire, and maybe sneak in a Blenheim F Mk.I too, the models are nicely done, the photos and explanations clear, and even while aimed at the casual or beginning modeler, even the experienced builder can pick up a thing or two from the book.
