Rowan takes a look at Eduard's replacement wheels for Revell's recent largescale early Gustav.

Revell's 1:32 Messerschmitt Bf 109G-2/4 (reviewed here: https://aeroscale.net/news/messerschmitt-bf-109g-2-4) represents great value for money, and the kit wheels certainly aren't shoddy - but Eduard have taken things to entirely new level with their Brassin upgrades.

The set arrives in a simple resealable bag and comprises new mainwheels and a tailwheel, plus a sheet of die-cut washi-tape painting masks.

Preparation will be very straightforward, with the casting points forming "flats" for a weighted look. With that done, the new wheels are straight drop-in replacements for the kit parts - actually simpler than the originals with the mainwheels' integral hubs.

And the Eduard wheels are simply superb, boasting wonderfully crisp detail that totally eclipses the Revell originals. In terms of style, it's worth noting that Eduard combined plain mainwheel hubs with treaded tyres in this set, so check photo references for any specific airframe if you can (more combinations are bound to be in the works from Eduard soon).

As you'll expect with Eduard, the set comes with a slick set of instructions, with excellent illustrations and colour matches for Gunze Sango paints. Most modellers will hardly need them, though - the upgrade is so straightforward.

Conclusion

At less than a tenner, Eduard's new wheels set is a very affordable upgrade for Revell's early Gustav - and one of the beauties of the kit is that it's so cheap, it's the perfect basis to add aftermarket extras to without breaking the bank. In terms of simplicity - this is an ideal upgrade for beginners to cut their teeth on.
