Exito Decals has released a new set of 1:72 and 1:48 scale decals 'Wulf Pack' vol.2 featuring the Fw 190 A-5, Fw 190 A-8 and Fw 190 D-9, Tim takes a look at the quarter scale edition

The way the decal set is packed is impressive. The decals and colour profiles are placed in a cellophane envelope and then packed in sturdy cardboard carton for posting. There is a thick A4 sheet of card inside reducing the likely hood of the package being folded. Inside you will find:

  • 1 x sheet of decals
  • 3 x A4 format full colour instructions.

This new release from Exito Decals contains markings for three butcher birds. The marking options include:

  • Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-5, WNr. 2648, ‘Yellow 3’, flown by Lt. Josef Wurmheller, Kapitän of 9./JG 2, Vannes, France, summer 1943.
  • Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8, WNr. 737938, ‘Blue 9’ of 4./JG 301, Germany, spring 1945.
  • Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-9, WNr. 210129, ‘Red 9’ of 12./JG 54, Frankfurt am Main area, Germany, spring 1945.

Exito Decals state that the first two marking options have never previously been reproduced in decal form. The markings for the Fw 190 D-9 has appeared in a kit release but was incorrectly identified and depicted by one of the manufacturer.

Exito Decals are not just about the decals as the colour profiles are superb. The quality of the print is so good, you could frame them and hang them on the wall. The three double sided A4 sized colour profiles each covering one of the three marking options is printed on gloss paper. One side has two side profiles and the other has plan view above aircraft. There are scrap views of the detail of the outer section of the underside of the wing. Period photos of all three of the aircraft are included in the profile. The excellent illustrations are created by Janusz Swiatlon.

Exito Decals utilise AK Interactive and Mr Hobby paints for colour references as well as the relevant RLM reference number.

The decal sheet is printed by Cartograf of Italy, which speaks volumes for their quality. Colour density is very good and there is virtually no carrier film to be seen. The definition and registration as you can see in the close-up photos is exceptional. Particular for the fine detail in the kill markings and the badges. The spinner spiral is a useful addition for the Fw 190 D-9. In my sample there was a choice of full or partial Hakenkreuz.

This decal release is also available in 1:72 scale [ED72014]

Conclusions

The real value of decal releases like this is providing something different in the way of markings for your build. Model manufacturers don’t always find the most interesting marking options for their releases. The quality of decals printed by Cartograf speak for themselves. Exito Decals has gone to some trouble to produce high quality colour profiles or perhaps prints is a better description.  The inclusion of the high-quality profiles certainly set this decal set from Exito Decals a notch above many companies. Ideal for adorning your workshop or workstation wall. Highly recommended and a great price too at €12.02 from Exito Decals online shop.

Our thanks to Exito Decals for this review sample
