Fonthill Media has published a new monograph ‘The Messerschmitt Bf 110 Story’ written by Jan Forsgren

‘The Messerschmitt Bf 110 Story’ by Jan Forsgren is a comprehensive operational and technical account of the Luftwaffe’s famous Zerstörer, from its inception as a new type of combat aircraft to its service on all fronts in defence of the Reich

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was conceived as a twin-engine heavy zerstörer. First flown in 1936, the Bf 110 was used in a wide variety of roles, including that of a day and night fighter, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance and glider tug. Entering service with the Luftwaffe in 1938, the Bf 110 was to remain in service until 1945. It made its debut over Poland in 1939 where the ‘blitzkrieg’ tactics were perfectly suited to the Bf 110. They also saw large-scale use during the invasion of France and the Low Countries; however, during the Battle of Britain, clashes with Hurricanes and Spitfires resulted in severe losses. It was obvious that the Bf 110 was unsuitable for daytime operations. By 1941, Bf 110 production was reduced in anticipation of its replacement, the Messerschmitt Me 210. Nonetheless, the Me 210 was a failure and consequently, the Bf 110 remained in production. With RAF bombers attacking Germany on an almost nightly basis, the Bf 110 was developed into a highly efficient night fighter. Amazingly, the Bf 110 remained in production until the end of the war with more than 6,000 being completed.

The book features:

  • Many Luftwaffe crew recollections of flying the Bf 110 into combat in various theatres of war
  • Highly detailed information on technical descriptions, non-Luftwaffe Bf 110 operators and preserved examples
  • Gloriously illustrated with seventy-five images, many of which are rare or unpublished from private collections
  • Of interest to aviation and military historians, scale modellers, flight enthusiasts and simmers such as IL-2, War Thunder and DCS
