This new range of cockpit detail sets from Eduard offers 3D water slide decals and pre-coloured photo etched parts, in this case for Eduard 1/48 scale Spitfire Mk.II
Eduard has developed the SPACE range of 3D Decals as an alternative way of creating instrument panels and side consoles. They are hydrophilic in nature so they will keep absorbing water if left soaking for too long. Eduard suggests using white glue to aid adhesion to the surface its going onto. The decal does not have any adhesive qualities. The glue that holds them onto the paper stays on the paper. The product is still evolving so it will be interesting to see how these perform and look with time.
As you would expect there are instructions for using the decals:
· Soak the decal in the warm water for couple of seconds and after its separation from the backing paper position it on the model.
· To increase decal's adherence, use the white glue, Mr.Mark Setter or apply to the glossy surface.
· Leaving decal in the water for too long can cause its swelling and distortion.

The 3D decal instrument panel included with this set looks very good and there is enough relief to add interest. The cluster of six of blind flying instruments in the centre and the oil and fuel gauges are raised a little. The glass of the instruments has a glossy transparent convex look. Detail on the instrument faces is very good. I have included a couple of images comparing the 3D decals with Eduard LööK and the pre-painted photo etched instrument panel. As well as the instrument panel there are five placards and a compass face. The instrument panel goes over the kits blank instrument panel[R64]. You will need to fill in the void in the middle to stop the decal settling into it.
The pre-coloured photo etch set includes Sutton seat harness, pilot armoured protection, rudder pedals and straps, internal and external mirror, bead gun sight, cockpit door hinge, pipe linking the two oxygen bottles, flare rack, undercarriage activation lever and undercarriage status indicator that fits in the upper wing.
Instructions are printed on both sides of an A4 sheet.
Conclusions
These look like another excellent string to the modellers bow regarding detailing the cockpit. The cockpit is always the first port of call of anyone viewing any model aircraft. Eduard has through the use of 3D water slide decals provided the modeller with another option to detail this all important area.
