On 17 July 1940, Oberst Josef Kammhuber launched Germany’s night-fighter response to the growing RAF bomber threat. His Fernnachtjagd tactics aimed to strike British bombers at their most vulnerable - during takeoff and landing.

Early missions saw converted German bombers like the Do 17Z and Ju 88 in action, with mixed success. By 1942, newer aircraft like the Me 210/410 entered the fight - but results were limited. In fact, during just one RAF raid over Berlin in Feb 1944, the Luftwaffe shot down more bombers than the entire Me 410 campaign had in over a year.

A bold strategy... but not always an effective one.
