This 1/48 scale Ju 188 Interior Detail Set is designed for the recent release by  Revell. This set focuses on the cockpit area most of it will be visible under all that glazing. There are two photo etched [PE] frets: one pre-painted and the other in bare brass.

The parts will detail:

  • Pilots instruments
  • Flight control: throttle, prop pitch, rudder pedals, control wheel
  • Side wall [Left]
  • Side console
  • Instruments to the rear
  • Additional detail for the guns
  • Circular frame for the gun position
  • Ammunition belts
  • Ammunition chutes
  • Gun mounts
  • Crew hatch
  • Forward bulkhead in the tail wheel bay

The existing cockpit detail on many of the plastic parts that these PE replace need to be sanded down or removed. The kit does include decal instruments, but they don’t look as detailed as this Eduard set. There are pre-coloured parts for the flight instruments and for the electrical boxes to the rear bulkhead. These items alone will add interest, but the wealth of detail on the bare brass will make for a very interesting cockpit. The various instrument panels are made up from multiple parts, so some careful gluing of the pre-painted parts is necessary. They do add a bit of depth to the detail, something that decals can’t do. There are a few pre-painted dials to attach to here and there. The group of instruments to the rear have around fourteen pre-painted and two bare brass parts to add. Other parts of the cockpit are not neglected though as there are detail parts gun supports and harnesses, ammunition belts and boxes, as well as some parts I can’t identify, but will make sense if you have the kit.

The instructions are pretty good in showing you what plastic parts this set supplements, but there’s little information on the folding of the 3D parts: ammunition boxes, ammunition belts, crew seat, instrument boxes. If you have used Eduard PE parts before it should not be a problem, if not then you will be perhaps left scratching your head.

Conclusion

With the large expanse of clear plastic around the crew compartment a detailing set is a must really. As the Revell kit utilises the moulds from Dragon Models I would imagine that this Detail Set would fit that too as well. DML also released the Ju 188 using the same moulds.

To go along with the interior set Eduard has also released the pre-coloured photo etched seat belt set. There are decal seat belts in the Revell release of the Ju 188, but they don’t look as good as the offerings from Eduard. The pilots seat needs a couple of slots drilling through the backrest so you can push through the harness. A second set of straps is attached to the rear of the seat and the harness.

The instructions identify the kit parts that the seat belts are attached too. Some of the photo etched parts need gluing together. There is a second set of seat belts for one of the crew seats and the other two sets of seat belt are attached to the air frame or floor. The parts have excellent printed detail on them. The grainy nature of the paint gives a textured look to the straps.

Both these detail sets are definitely worthwhile acquiring for the Revell kit.
