But it's worth remembering that the standard kit cockpit is already very good; this is it in its basic form without any added photo-etch etc:

So, Eduard have released a new SPACE set of 3D decals for modellers who want to keep the bulk of the standard cockpit, but still give it a very effective boost.

The upgrade arrives in a simple re-sealable clear envelope and comprises a sheet of 3D decals and a fret of etched accessories. 

The 3D decals provide a new instrument panel, plus details for the side and central consoles and document holders for the cockpit sides. Add to that the etched fret with its seat harness plus a backing plate for one of the document holders. The new instrument panel and consoles look excellent, with pin-sharp printing and recessed bezels which are glazed for a realistic effect.

I'll caution now when looking at the accompanying photos - high resolution shots never seem to do these sets any favours. They accentuate a speckled effect, but the appearance to the naked eye is really impressive, and the detail definitely defies the best that any hand-painting could achieve.

Completing the set is a sheet of clear instructions showing where a bit of minor surgery is required shaving off raised details on the kit parts - basically the same as you would do with a photoetched set. The work isn't overly complicated, so this would be a suitable choice for anyone wanting to try a cockpit upgrade for the first time.

Conclusion

3D decals have rapidly become established as a very effective alternative to earlier forms of detail upgrades, and Eduard's new set for the Wildcat is beautifully produced. If you've already got the Profi-PACK Wildcat, you'll probably be more than satisfied with the colour photo-etched details already included, but where the SPACE set will come into its own is for use with Weekend Editions or Oversprues. Here it will offer a straightforward and very worthwhile boost to the styrene "office".
