The Mitsubishi Zero Model 32 has an improved engine with the Sakae Model 21 replacing the previous powerplant: the Sakae 12. Furthermore, a new wing planform was added, with the wingtips squared off and shortened by 50cm to improve manoeuvrability. This change significantly altered the aircraft's silhouette, and it stood out so much that it was mistaken for a "new aircraft" by the Allied forces shortly after its deployment in combat.
