Ranked at skill level 2, the 1:144 scale Boeing 314 Clipper makes a comeback to the Airfix range in Vintage Classic form. With the tooling created in 1967 and the pack illustration beautifully depicted on the box front created by Roy Cross, featuring the scheme of “Dixie Clipper” from Pan American World Airways, 1943. Whilst the second scheme included depicts the aircraft of “Bristol”, British Overseas Airways Corporation, 1941. Overall, the kit contains a total of 76 parts including a clear display stand, and once built, the kit measures an overall length of 222mm and a wingspan of 320mm.

In 1936, Pan American World Airways turned their attention to offering an air route across the Atlantic Ocean. A design competition was launched which called for a flying boat with much higher range and payload than existing aircraft. Boeing successfully met the Pan Am requirements.
Construction of the Type 314 Clipper began in 1937, and the first flight took place on the 7th June 1938. The Clipper was one of the largest aircraft of its time, with a 46m (152ft) wingspan and a loaded weight of over 38000kg (84000lb). Up to 68 passengers could be carried in luxury. Famously, the “Dixie Clipper” carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt back from the Casablanca conference in 1943, and Sir Winston Churchill travelled on the B.O.A.C operated Clippers “Bristol” and “Berwick” across the Atlantic in 1942.
