Spitfire IX

History
In the early months of 1942, with the clear superiority of the Focke Wulf Fw 190 over the Spitfire VB, there was much pressure to get Spitfires into production using the new two-stage supercharged Merlin 61 engine. In September 1941 the Spitfire Mk III prototype N3297 had been converted by Rolls-Royce at their Hucknall plant to take a Merlin 60, which had been specifically designed for use in the Wellington Mk VI high altitude bomber.

Although the Mk IX's airframe did not have the aerodynamic and strength improvements, or the modified control surfaces of the Mk VII and VIII, the Mk IX still proved to be an effective counter to the Focke Wulf Fw 190.

The Model
With the kit of TAMIYA I try to represent one aircraft that was acted during the dark period of civil war, with s/n EN 143 from 335 Sqn .The kit of TAMIYA is just amazing. They were scratch builds in the following points: marking, gun bay, machine guns, engine, cockpit , safe boarding and head rest. The camouflage had been painted with the excellent colors of Lifecolor with the following codes: Dark Green UA 091,Ocean Grey UA 093,Medioum Sea Grey UA 094.The inside had been painted with the H-319 interior green of Gunze and the spinner with LC 01 White of Lifecolor, the light blue had been mixed with No 89 and No 109 of Humbrol. In the end the aircraft had been sprayed with the acrylic mat varnish of Winsor-Newton from the series Galleria.

Chris, Now that's an exceptional Spitfire build for sure. Your detailing really adds quite a lot to the already well detailed Tamiya kit. Perfect painting an decaling goes without saying. As for your weathering, it sure depicts a well worn operational aircraft. I really like how you faded the top side colors, it's very well done. Joel
