Some nice work being done here!

I however have not made much of a start with mine so will have to bow out.
I did make a start.

Cheers Rob.

Hi All!

So I've been busily finishing up the Ki-45.

The Nichimo kit is really a nice kit. Molded in 1982, it was state of the art, by todays standard it lacks little. The cockpit is basic, the glass is on the thick side, and the gear doors are a bit fiddly. Aside from that, it's a great kit, and fun to build. Fits are on par with Tamiya and Hasegawa. The build was very enjoyable.

After getting the airframe done, I thought it'd be neat to do a chipping job on it. So it was black based using Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black, mixed 1:4 with Mr. Leveler 400 lacquer thinner. There were two spots needing a little more attention, but aside from that it looked great. I then covered it with Alclad II Aluminum.

Next up, I painted the entire airframe in Mr. Color 130, dark green (Kawasaki). Turned out great.

I then went to chip away, and for the life of me it would not chip at all. My guess, I let the top coat cure too long, and that's all I can figure.

I opted to move on, and do the bird looking a little newer. So I gave it a clear coat of my "Future" mix, and prepared to use the Aeroscale decal set that came with the kit. So far so good, no real issues, I was disappointed about the chipping, though not a deal breaker.

I then proceeded to decal. Second worst set of decals that I've used next to the Mauve P-40N. Out of register, didn't stick, and resulted in three repaints, and changes in tail insignia. After much work, and setting solutions, I got to point that I said "this will be good enough".

There is nothing worse than having a great build ruined by decals. What surprised me was that Aeroscale decals have always been superb in my experience. I was stunned that the hinamaru's were out of register. I used Techmod hinamaru's for the fuselage, and did great.

I stuck with it, and was able to get something passable. Though, this should have been a cake walk, it turned into a nightmare. I'm happy to have finished it.

In hindsight, I should have just painted the markings and saved myself a lot of trouble. Also, I should not have waited so long before trying to chip the paint.

It turned out ok, though upon looking at the pictures, I see that the pitot tube, and antenna were missing. I did add those, though will not be doing a photo reshoot!

I highly recommend the kit, though be aware that the glass is pretty thick, I should have used the Squadron replacement. Can't recommend the Aeroscale decals for this one (a first for me). Hope you enjoy!

Paul,

It's a combination of an Eduard cockpit and Xtraparts conversion.

Cheers Rob.

Well, time to wrap this one up. Congrats to all who finished and thanks to all who participated. By the way, if you're interested in doubles, you might want to check out my latest proposal.

Ribbons have been awarded, so if you didn't get one and think you should have, let me know.

See you around the site!

Dear Michael

I hope you will excuse me for not having finished my model for this campaign and the other(4th generation jets) because of the problems that have arisen in my country. The economy is getting worse and there is more and more work.
When I get a little free from the work chaos, I will include the planes in the Hangar campaign.

Jose, nothing to worry about. Ive enjoyed your posts and picked up several ideas to improve my own building.

Life does keep getting in the way at times.
