Welcome Jesper!

Robbie, we normally schedule campaigns in 6 month increments, unless they're special or more complicated. If we need more time for this one as we reach the end, I will certainly consider extending it.

All, we don't have a ribbon for this one and, try as I might, I just can't think of a good idea for one. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Hi mates,
for this campaign Czechoslovak fighter pilot Otto Smik, CO of 312 Sqd RAF in 1944, comes to my mind. As I've got his Spitfire MK XIV in my stash, I report to campaign duty now. See you in January

Thought I'd give this one a bump just to get it out there. Also, try as I might, I can't come up with a good ribbon idea for this one. Any suggestions would be welcome!

And happy Thanksgiving to everyone here in the States!

Just to get started: how about a person carrying a suitcase and rifle? Or "Have gun, will fly"?

That's a nice idea, Pasi, but how would you pack this into a small ribbon? I had something different in mind but also don't know how to bring up a ribbon with a "Spitschmitt" or a "Mésserfire", as these 2 countries had the most volunteers in their air forces.

Or how about just a bunch of tiny flags to show the internationality of this conflict?

Hmmm, no easy task ...

Hello,
Interesting campaign, but if I build a BF-109G and the pilot comes from Austria, is the pilot a foreign pilot serving with the Luftwaffe for the so called Reich from that time frame?
Would like to know, because for the Commonwealth it seems to be accepted.

Kind regards,

Robert Jan

Tricky... I guess it sort of depends on whether you consider the annexation legitimate (which, for the record, I don't. But let's not start that.) But I see your point about Commonwealth pilots. Of course, Austria didn't have its own air force and the Commonwealth countries did... Hmm...

I'm gonna call it on the side of inclusiveness and say that Austrians (and Czechs/Slovaks, for that matter) flying for the Luftwaffe count for this campaign. Rather than have more models than less!

Thanks for the clearance on this Michael. Will subscribe, I never build a German plane from that period. Have a lot coming to my doorstep in a few days.
I will go for a Revell G6 and some nice aftermarket!

Kind regards,

I have some, well, you may call it objection to that, Michael.

I understand this campaign that way, that the pilot was already a pilot in the air force of his home country before he joined the air force of another for fighting. Is this the intention of the campaign? So someone like the slovakian Otto Smik would count, because he served in the Czechoslovakian Army before joining the RAF, someone like the austrian Walter Nowotny wouldn't because he served only in the Luftwaffe and not in the Austrian Air Force before 1938. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If you decide in a different way, I have of course no problem with that.

In my case for this campaign, I'll build a Bf 109 F-2, which was flown at the Eastern Front by spanish volunteers of the "Esquadrilla Azul", who were ordinary personal of the Spanish Air Force, before and after their engagement in Russia. Many of them flew already during the Spanish Civil War.

Torsten,

I guess we had a misunderstanding here. I never meant to imply that the pilots had to be pilots in their own country's air arm first. That would disqualify many of the pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, who learned to fly in France; or the Eagle Squadrons, who learned to fly in Canada or Britain. I just meant that the pilot be from a different country than the one he (or she) flew for. Thus Smik and Nowotny would qualify, as would the Spanish pilots you plan to do.

I hope this clears up my meaning for this one and that it doesn't chase you away, as it sounds like your project would be an excellent addition to the campaign!

Thanks for the clarification, Michael. I guess I misunderstood something here. So there should be no more questions. My "spanish" 109 is ready to hit the bench though is still 5 weeks to wait. OMG, 2018 is over by then already ....

I've changed my mind, going to build my 1st Airfix.
Subject Flying Tiger Pilot Charles Older flying P-40B with tail number 68, member of the 3rd Squadron Hell Angels.
Seen the timeframe its better for me to build in 1/48 (and less detailed) that I had in mind for a 1/32 Bf-109G6.
Looking forward to the next year already.

Hey, I sorta had an Idea for a ribbon to include parts of a US Star, RAF Roundel, Soviet Star, Rising sun and a Balkenkreuz. Little too much detail for a tiny ribbon, but it was an idea. And then I saw this:

Does this get any of you graphics whizzes an idea?

Don’t have much time right now to put something together but here’s an even simpler ribbon proposal that (almost) anyone could scrounge together. Two of the most famed groups of foreign fighters are the French Foreign Legion and the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War. What if we combined some of their symbols? Replace the bursting bomb on the FFL flag with the Internationalist star. Images of both below...just use your imagination for now! It would easy to make, easy to scale down, and pretty distinctive. Thoughts?

Had some time today to put my idea into action. Here's a sample of my idea, see what you think.

Interesting Robby. Kind of an obscure reference, in that it certainly isn't immediately recognizable as standing for foreign pilots, but simple and easier to make out than, say, a Lafayette Escadrille Indian head, an Eagle Squadron fighting eagle, or a Flying Tiger which I was also considering.

What does everyone else think?

Hm, the FFL does have no air force, only ground forces .... So it doesn't fit here, as the campaign is only for foreign pilots. I would prefer something like Mark's idea if there's no copyright on it.
