Work has kept me from the bench for a bit but I'm finding some more time so I thought I might try to get a build done for this campaign. Ive had a 1/48 p51b under construction since last fall but as that is pretty far along Ill see if I can get this hasegawa 1/72 p51b done in what time remains.I see no reaspn to complicate this one with any aftermarket and the main pieces fit very well so I see no obvious obstacles to getting it done. I think i may even use the kit decals (not the stripes though)

The first day of my p51b build was quite productive. Inspite of my declaration to keep it simple I couldnt help but to cut out the flaps so I can drop them. Im using styrene to fill out lost portions of the flap which will be sanded to shape and scribed.

I then filled and sanded most of the wing panel lines and then got to work on the cockpit. Since im planning on using the kit canopy with its inherent distortion the cockpit doesnt require any uprages as far as physical detail. I added thin strips of tamiya tape for the harness, used the kit decal for the dash and then used paint and colored pencils to detail the cockpit. I think it turned out well, just some finishing touches before the pit is done

Nice finish Simon! I really like the paint work you did in the cockpit too, really livened it up

After dry fitting my fuselage and cockpit I made some minor cockpit mods to address some obviously missing details. The missing rollover frame behind the armor I can forgive but missing med kit/headrest is pretty prominent imho. I made both from styrene strip. The med kit was cut and sanded to a rounded rectangle with paint making up the rest of the detail. My appologies i didnt realize how awful this pic was, but you get the idea.

The A frame was just 2 strips glued to the back of the armor and chopped off at the top. I painted the shadows and highlights which really gives it a more realistic depth and hides how out of scale the strips I used were. Using thicker pieces complicated installation, im going for quick and easy here!

I also got some work in building the flaps back up, they're coming along well. I'm glad I took the time to cut these out.

I also got to work drilling out the exhaust, the first set went without a hitch, the second set fought me tooth and nail but after some applications of CA, sanding stick, #77 drill and persistence they are done. No photo though, I dont want to look at them again for a while

Sorry that I post all photo's at once but I otherwise forget,..

1/48 Revell P-51D that I bought dirt cheap but as this is an old kit it's,.. Well it needs some TLC, the decals (with a nice looking canopy) are hasa bought at some point fair also cheap

Still having problems finding my way with re-scribing so perfect practice

Took off the flaps in order to give the model a more lively look and added scratch detail in the interior

After priming flat aluminum which I flattened more with oils after this I added some aluminum rubbing compound to make the aluminum skin more worn but that does not come out on the photo's

Made a simple base and scratched the blocks and inlet caps and that's it a SAAF P-51 that served in Korea

Ok it is official now. Sorry guys. I won't make it. Unfortunately loads of free-lance work and a compulsory trip out of town killed the buzz. I may finish it if I don't do anything else today but I don't want to bludgeon the kit. So apologies.
Cool SA Mustang by the way. I always thought the impala was orange instead of red. It looks really cool. Definitely one of my "must do" list.

The major decals are on now, and everything is pretty much complete apart from the landing gear and IFF lamps.

Jess,

did that Hasegawa kit come with the complete sprues for their normal P-51D releases? Weapons and all? I might have to pick one up, I'd like to add that particular setup to my Mustang collection and could use some spare stores for other things.

Hi All,

I just noticed that I have signed this campaign and it is closing soon.

In an attempt to get some modelling Mojo back I will try to finish Italeris A-36 Apache in the coming two weeks. Luckily this is not an overly complicated kit ... and it is pretty good for a 20 year old one (it says 1994). This is what I got:

and I just started a blog-thread here.

all the best

Good luck! Any idea what markings you'll be using?

Ive got the major portion of my build done, working on masking the canopy now then I'll mask out the D-day stripes before I bite the bullet on a bare metal finish!

Some D day stripe masking action!

Glad this bit is behind me, 2.5-3 hours of masking that mess, tail ID stripes too. I've done alot of mental flip flopping over the NMF between using tamiya as12 and alclad. Ive not done a NMF build yet and with the clock running down I decided to stick to the original plan of using as12 but with a slight twist. Im going to preshade the panels immediately around the exhaust as these always appear darker. I think this is the only variation in the BMF I need, the rest is pretty broken up by the OD, markings and invasion stripes or is on the underside

Ditto that last comment. A nice build to watch with your usual fab results.
Take care,

Hi friends,
time is running out for me slowly...got into minor difficulties with painting (colors need a few coats, bleeding under the masking tape
But I'm still hoping to finish with the deadline, still nearly a week

It saddens me to admit I am going to end up as a DNF for this one, my favorite bird. I am in Europe traveling so will have to send her to the land of Hangar Queens when I return.
