That's funny,

I am thinking of doing a Monogram B-24 with the Dragon and it's tail markings.

Cheers Rob.

Go for it Rob, the more the merrier.

Happy new year Warren.
Not a silly suggestion at all. It is after all one of the coolest nose-arts eve applied and you'd have to be mad not to have it in a collection. I was thinking it at the time I posted. There are still plenty of Academy Liberators out there, some boxings cheaper than others. I also fancy having a crack at doing one in RAF Coastal Command colours at some point.

I bought the Dragon and his Tail decals especially for a build, you were lucky enough to get them in a kit!

You could easily build dozens of Liberators and all of them look different. How about an RAAF one in natural metal?

Cheers
Warren

Don't give me ideas! If I had the space I could easily build a large collection of Liberators in all sorts of variations and colours. Its one of those types that was everywhere and doing all sorts of roles. I've always fancied doing one of the RAF electronic warfare variants. Never seen one done and I think it would a unique model. The olde Airfix Liberator seems to be the cheapest and easiest to get hold of but I don't know if its any good or more hassle than its worth.

I remember building one of those in the 1970s..

All those moving surfaces would just end up being a pain as the gaps between the ailerons, elevators and rudders and their surfaces are way too big.

Had a look on Ebay and the Academy ones are around the $20 mark (+ postage) and the most expensive< well surprise surprise it is the Hasegawa ones..

RAAF decals are available from Novascale. Not sure of their quality as I got some 1/48 F-111 decals and you could see the pixels used for the colour and there was no carrier film so you had to cut each decal out up close and personal.

It sounds a lot like their old B-17 and Wellington I built years back. Both needed a tube of filler each to sort out and I vividly remember the transparencies having no molded frames. So they were fun. I think I'll put money towards an Academy.
Can anyone tell me why the Eduard repops of the Academy kit are more expensive? Do they include etch and masks?

I had a set from Novascale for RAAF Phantoms a while back. Don't remember noticing anything like pixels that in the printing, but then again I've yet to use them. Might just be an issue with the current batches with luck.

I just dug mine out. The Phantom decals look just like any other, but I also found a set of decals for formation lights. They look like they were printed on an old dot-matrix printer and are all on one continuous piece of film. Seems to be a bit like pot luck what you get.

I've decided on doing this beast afterall.

Can someone point me to some of the aftermarket details for the Greif. Specifically the rockets. My LHS had a set which they sold. I can't remember who manufactured them but they were plastic and brass etchings.

Also what Model Master paints match the colors used? I know that there were several paint schemes. I'm leaning toward the dark upper and lighter lower paint scheme.

Sometimes while waiting for paint to dry, I'll play around with ribbon designs. I notice a ribbon has not been chosen for this campaign, so I thought I'd offer a couple of choices.

The eagle reminds me of the intensity a bombers gunner would have, and the beak kinda shows the guns head-on. More or less a nose gunner analogy.
The B-25 engine is obviously a bomber.

Just a couple of options to think about.

I had a go as well, though they don't look quite as good shrunk down.

Cheers Rob.

Luftwaffe bombers were usually in a splinter scheme of RLM 70 and 71 on the upper surfaces, RLM 65 on the lower. IIRC, the 177 had RLM 02 grey under the mottling on the fuselage sides. Model Master has these colours in their range.

Eduard has a few sets for the Revell kit which you can probably persuade to fit the Airfix.
Cockpit and glide bombs and masks.
Squadron has a vac canopy which is absolutely essential if you put all that lovely Eduard etch inside the cockpit. It would be a crime to try and cover it up with that horrid Airfix canopy.

When you're thinking of shrinking ribbon designs down to small size, what you need to keep in mind is the simpler design the better. Even something like this

Becomes very difficult to make out when it's shrunk down to ribbon size

Something like this works better

At ribbon size it's still clear enough to see

Who, me? I've been avoiding this one cause I don't have a place to display a bomber (thought it was only for 4 engines). But I see a couple of twins on the list, I've got a couple of B-25's, a B-26, Martin Baltimore, maybe a Hudson, an A-20 and an A-26. With a mid summer start date, I'm in now.

Mark: I've got my eye on a Handley Page Hampden by Airfix or their Canberra. So I guess I need to enlist now.

If so that's appropriate, given that they were developed in response to bombers. It also looks like Blue Danube which is directly related.

I picked this up yesterday for $8.29 usd so I could not pass it up. This will be my entry on start day.

As for the ribbon, they all look good so the one picked will be ok with me.
