Spitfire Mk.I Early Canopy
Vac formed Canopy for the Airfix Spitfire Mk 1

by: Tim Hatton [ LITESPEED ]

Kit canopies are mostly always a disappointment in their scale thickness and quality. We always think about perhaps forming our own, but are usually always put off by the amount of work. This is were Pavla comes in in offering excellent replacement canopies at a small cost.

Contents.

The resealable plastic bag contains:

-1 x vac formed canopy.

The single vac formed transparent plastic item enables you to create the early type canopy to be displayed open or closed. This canopy replaces the canopy of the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire MkI. The quality of the plastic is very good, very thin and clear. Definitely worth using in place of the kit canopy. The windscreen has the armoured windscreen attached. For this reason you should not be tempted to use it if you are thinking of creating the prototype. The prototype did not have an armoured windscreen. There is plenty of plastic between the three elements that make up the windscreen, canopy and rear glazing. The frame work is very well defined.
Obviously great care will be needed to separate the components when cutting. As they are the canopies feel pretty strong, but once cut into they will need some support on the inside. Not an item to rush and use a fresh surgical blade. But they will improve the look of your Airfix Spitfire no end.

Conclusions.

It may not be the biggest, most complex or expensive After market product out there for 1/72 Spitfires, but this lovely little vac formed early canopy will certainly improve the look of your Airfix Spitfire. Highly recommended.
