History

The Oerlikon 20 mm cannon is a series of autocannons, based on an original design by Reinhold Becker of Germany, very early in World War I, and widely produced by Oerlikon Contraves and others. Various models of Oerlikon cannon were used during World War II, and they are still in use today.

The Oerlikon FF was installed as armament on some fighters of the 1930s, such as the Polish PZL P.24G. Locally produced derivatives of the Oerlikon cannon were used much more extensively, on aircraft, on ships and on land. In the air, the Ikaria MG FF was used as armament on a number of German aircraft, of which the most famous is the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The Japanese similarly used the Type 99 cannon ( a license built version of the FF) on a number of types including the Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

On German WWII aircraft the MG FF saw widespread use in fighters such as:
Bf 109 E-3 to F-1.
Bf 110 C to F.
Fw 190 A-1 to A-5.
These were typically fitted with an inboard pair of MG 151 and an outboard pair of MG FF, although the MG FF were sometimes removed in the field in order to save weight. These cannons were also fitted to bombers such as:
Do 217,
Ju 88,
He 111,
Do 17, and many others.

Hundreds of 1/72 scale Revell and Airfix kits later my eyes started to change and I wanted to do more detail. With the advent of DML / Dragon and Eduard I sold off my ...
