Me 410 Heavy Fighter Profilpack

by: Peter Allen [ FLITZER ]

BACKGROUND
First designed in 1937 as a potential replacement for the Messerschmitt Bf110, the Messerschmitt Me210 entered service in 1941, despite having very bad stability and flying capabilities.

Messerschmitt carried out a number of developments to improve the situation including lengthening the fuselage and engine nacelles and adding wing-edge slots that were incorporated in the Me410 which began to reach air units in 1943. The Me410 was an improvement but stability was still a problem.

Nevertheless during the war, the 410 was fitted with virtually every weapon system in the Luftwaffe’s arsenal at one time or another, amounting to over 140 permutations. Rarely does any aircraft show such versatility

It was also used as a test bed for mixed propulsion units, having one or a pair of jets slung under the cockpit.

THE KIT
First off this is a very comprehensive kit, having many parts and options, including injection moulded main parts plus clear injection canopy, vacuform canopies, resin parts, etched parts, decals and paint masks for canopy and wheels. All parts are separately bagged including both types of clear parts.

PLASTIC PARTS
6 sprues containing 74 parts.
Superb smooth thin grey plastic carrying nice fine detail on fuselage and wings. Smaller parts also have nice detail including cockpit walls. No significant flash or defects of any kind, so will need minimal clean up, if any.

CLEAR PARTS
1 sprue of 5 parts and a pair of vacuform canopies.
Sprue nice and clear of average thickness with good frame detail. Vacu canopies are also very well detailed and nice and clear

RESIN PARTS
30 parts including cockpit detail parts, wheels, exhaust stacks, guns and cannon.
Superb detail on most parts. One part missing from one of the casting blocks.

ETCHED PARTS
1 fret of 71 parts including control levers, seat belts and cockpit detailing.
Very good.

FILM
1 film with 4 instrument sections.

DECALS
For 1 of 4 aircraft. Genrally look very good, but curious...on same sheet, black with white keyline swastikas in good register but two-colour code letters lower down are not. Pity, as green codes are not common in the after market sector.

INSTRUCTIONS
20 A5 pages including parts lists, coloured camo schemes and paint mask diagrams.
The diagrams are well illustrated but due to the complexity of the kit care is required.

PAINT MASKS
Usual Eduard high standard.

CONCLUSIONS
Overall it is one of the best kits I’ve seen in a long time. All types of parts are very well done.
A bit on the pricy side but it is a very thorough kit and I assume if one were to buy all the parts, after market, separately one would expect to make a saving. It scores 9 overall because (a.) of the high price and (b.) are there any 10’s out there?
Not for the beginner but a reasonably experienced modeller should get a great result with time and care. And if some of our experts get hold of it, I would expect superb results.
There are so many parts, the bonus is that the spares box is due for a feast.
Highly recommended.
