Finnish I-153 Chaikas
I-153 Chaika in Finnish service - Vols. 1 & 2

by: Rowan Baylis [ MERLIN ]

ICM’s new I-153 “Chaika” provides an excellent basis for a fine model. Its low price makes it ideal to splash out on the detail and correction sets coming out - and, of course, this means decals too. SBS Model have released a pair of very interesting aftermarket sheets covering captured Chaikas pressed into Finnish service.

Each set features four colour schemes, with sufficient national and individual markings to build them all.

D48003 - Volume I covers the following machines:
1.“Red 12” of 153 IAP, captured at Kerimäki, June 1941
2.“Red 12” again, now with Finnish insignia applied
3.IT-11 of 1/LeLv 30, Rämpötti, 1943
4.VH-101 of LLv 26, Utti, 1940

D48004 - Volume II features:
1.IT-19 of 3/LeLv 6, Rämpötti, 1942
2.H4 MB, Air Force HQ, Malmi, 1943 in Luftwaffe markings
3.VH-13 of 3/LLv 6, Turku, 1941
4.IT-16 of 3/LeLv 6, Rämpötti, 1942

The decals look excellent quality and are printed in perfect register on the sample sheets. They appear to be exceptionally thin, which bodes well for them snuggling down very well, while the glossy items have crystal clear carrier film.

Each scheme is illustrated in full colour with good quality profiles and plan views, and a nice touch is that both sides are shown in each case. FS equivalents are given for the colour needed.

Conclusion
SBS’s new Chaika decals look excellent and will make ideal companions for ICM’s new kits. The colour schemes chose are very attractive and offer a perfect choice for anyone looking to build a Chaika that’s a little bit “different”. Highly recommended.

I've been modelling for about 40 years, on and off. While I'm happy to build anything, my interests lie primarily in 1/48 scale aircraft. I mostly concentrate on WW2 subjects, although I'm also interested in WW1, Golden Age aviation and the early Jet Age - and have even been known to build the occas...
