History
The Polikarpov Po-2 (also U-2) served as a general-purpose Soviet biplane, nicknamed Kukuruznik (Russian: Кукурузник, from Russian "kukuruza" (кукуруза) for maize; thus, "maize duster" or "crop duster"), NATO reporting name "Mule". The reliable, uncomplicated concept of the Po-2's design made it an ideal training aircraft, as well as doubling as a low-cost ground attack, aerial reconnaissance, psychological warfare and liaison aircraft during war, proved to be one of the most versatile light combat types to be built in the Soviet Union. As of 1978 it remained in production for a longer period of time than any other Soviet-era aircraft.

U-2/Po-2 S.A. upgrade set
Item No - 49727
Price - 14,95 €
Packed in Eduard's standard re-sealable bag, the 1 part coloured and self adhesive metal fret is packed with a cardboard insert for protection and a small set of instructions.
The bomber version that ICM produce will benefit from this set the most, as some parts will be left over for the other versions, but it is still a good set for the remaining versions.
The cockpit gets two new instrument panels and some much needed seat belts. The interior of the cockpit also gets some controls, map bins and a large control lever and spar part added.
The floor has some nice rudder pedals and a part that looks like a small table (not sure what this part is).
The engine gets new wiring and push rods, which will enhance the detail of the exposed engine well.
The anti aircraft gun gets a new sight and ammo bin, and the exterior bombs get new tail fins and fuses.
The last part is several cable control actuators for ailerons, rudders, and elevators and turnbuckles for the rigging (rigging not supplied), which fit onto the wings, tail planes and undercarriage.

Mask set
Item No - EX 471
Price - 4,45 €
The set is made of the usual high quality Kabuki tape, and is pre-cut.
This set contains masks for the wheels and the very small windscreen.
Starting with the windscreen, this is made up of four masks, two for the insides and two for the outside.
The wheels have two masks each, one for both sides, but they are for different bits. The inside masks cover the hubs so you can paint the tyres. The outside masks cover the tyre so you can paint the hubs. The mask for the tyres is because the kit has a very prominent bolt, which the masks would have trouble covering. Having different masks for the tyres and hubs does seem to make painting the wheels a bit harder then normal.
This set has a very limited use if you model any of the ski variants, but will be of more use if the bomber version is modelled.

Please remember, when contacting retailers or manufacturers, to mention that you saw their products highlighted here - on AEROSCALE.
SUMMARY
Highs: Good sets, especially for the bomber version
Lows: The mask set has little value if your modelling any of the ski equipped U-2/Po-2 versions.
Verdict: The etch set will add some nice detail to the base kit, and the inclusion of turnbuckles is an added bonus. The mask set does exactly as it says on the tin (to coin a phrase).

About Andy Brazier (betheyn)
FROM: ENGLAND - SOUTH EAST, UNITED KINGDOM

I started modelling in the 70's with my Dad building Airfix aircraft kits. The memory of my Dad and I building and painting a Avro Lancaster on the kitchen table will always be with me. I then found a friend who enjoyed building models, and between us I think we built the entire range of 1/72 Airfi...
