Noted author Greg VanWyngarden gives us another in his series of Jasta elite series. From Haupt.Berthold to Ltn. Raben this unit served with some distinction and bloody combats were its daily bread and butter.
"The history of Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel (or Jasta) 18 is one of the more unique and complex of German fighter squadrons of World War I. In fact, the unit could be said to have had something of a ‘split personality’. Formed in Flanders at the end of October 1916, the Jasta was first commanded by Oblt von Grieffenhagen, who led it to 35 victories in nine months. In August 1917, the aggressive and demanding Oblt Rudolf Berthold took over the Staffel and brought a cadre of seasoned pilots with him from his former command. Berthold moulded his new unit into a dedicated group of hunters, and left his stamp on the unit with a striking colour scheme of red-nosed Pfalz and Albatros fighters with dark blue fuselage and tail surfaces. This book tells the complete story of the unit, the victories, the defeats and the great aces who flew the red-nosed fighters."

This unit was the one that switched log books with Jasta 15 and thus identities when Berthold was moved there as commander.

w/n 2105, Fok. Dr.I 479/17 was flown during March - June 1918 by Ltn. Raben as commander of Jasta 15. Post war this machine wound up in French hands and most people think it was already in the hands of another Jasta. In truth this is unknown. This is a DML kit with decals from the Super Scale sheets.

This build represents Fokker D.VII 368 /18 an early Schwerin production type flown by Ltn. Hans Schultz of Jasta 18 when he was brought down and made a POW on 6 June 1918 by Lt. C. H. R. Lagesse of 29 sqdn RAF. Given the British capture number G/Br2/14. It was displayed with other captured aircraft in the agriculture hall in Islington. All of which had half or more of their coverings removed to display internal structures to public view for the price of 1 penny. Proceeds went to the RAF Hospital Fund. Eventually after its addition to the display all of the fuselage fabric was taken off this aircraft.
