The latest Datafile presents a fascinating account of the Caudron R.11 - a "flying porcupine" of its day. Perhaps something of an aeronautical dead-end, the armistice precluded any definitive assessment of the value of this relatively heavily armed twin-engined close escort fighter for bomber formations, and it was a further 20 years and another world war before the agile and conventional "little friends" ended the debate once and for all in the skies of Europe:
WINDSOCK DATA FILE No.161 - CAUDRON R.11
by C A Owers

FOR our latest French DF subject, Colin Owers turns his attention to the large twin-motor Caudron escort fighter that served with distinction in the last year of WWI. With its torpedo-like fuselage housing pilot and two gunners’ stations and its extended wings, the Caudron R.1 1 provided close escort to French day bombers deep into enemy territory. This unique DF covers the R.1 1 in unparallelled depth with over 60 rare photos, contemporary sketches and eight pages of detailed 1:48/1:72 scale general arrangement drawings that profile this classic type like never before. Add to this nine stunning new colour profiles by Ronny Bar and Roberto Zanella’s striking front cover painting - a combination of talents that mark DATAFILE No.161 as a landmark in this long-running series.
